The Origins of the Tooth Fairy!

For hundreds of years people have shared mystical legends and traditions about the loss of baby teeth. The early Europeans buried children’s teeth to spare the child from hardships in their afterlife. The Vikings believed that children’s teeth had magical powers that could help them fight in battle. They would pay their children for their lost baby teeth and string them onto necklaces and other jewelry. However, the most widely practiced ritual, one that has been documented everywhere from Russia to New Zealand to Mexico, involves offering the lost tooth as a sacrifice to a mouse or rat, in the hopes that the child’s adult teeth will continuously grow like a rodents does; and grow as strong and sturdy as the rodent’s. June is National Candy Month

It’s an odd reminder from a dentist…and we know we can’t ask you to give up candy, but we can offer some advice and tips to take care of your teeth.

How does eating candy or any sugar affect our teeth?

We all have bacteria in our mouth that can potentially cause cavities. These harmful bacteria, when exposed to sugar produce acid as a by-product. This acid attacks your teeth by weakening the enamel causing decay and cavities to form. Hence, continual snacking of sugar-containing foods subjects your teeth to continuous acid attacks, increasing your risks for tooth decay.

Research Team Develops Fillings That Help Teeth Regenerate.

Newsweek reports scientists are developing regenerative dental fillings that “allow teeth to heal themselves,” which could help some patients avoid needing root canal treatment. The treatment works by “stimulating stem cells to encourage the growth of dentin—the bony material that makes up the majority of the tooth—allowing patients to effectively regrow teeth that are damaged through dental disease.” At Sun Family Dental, conservative dental treatment is an essential part of our philosophy. Whilst this new filling material is still years away from being used on human patients, it is definitely a step in the right direction. We feel like this will be a highly beneficial treatment option in the future for our patients.

April is National Facial Protection & Oral Cancer Awareness Month

In recognition of Oral Cancer Awareness and National Facial Protection month, Sun Family Dental will help raise awareness in our local community in Alpharetta, Milton and Cumming about these 2 important oral health issues.

According to the Oral Cancer Foundation, about 48,250 Americans will be diagnosed with oral or pharyngeal cancer this year, and of those, about 9,575 will die. That’s at least 1 death per hour every day. The problem is much worse worldwide. Survival rates are much higher if a diagnosis is amde in the early stages. In addition to traditional risk factors such as tobacco and alcohol, the HPV16 virus may also play a role in causing oral cancer in younger people.  – See more at: Oral Cancer Facts
